We can't believe it took over six months to create this short little Monkeys video. And there were only 5 monkeys. Imagine if there were 10. We never would have finished.
In the end, we're glad we made it. It's a fun little number and any time we get to mix in some live-action shots featuring our own little monkey, it's even better.
So, why did it take 6 months to finish this?
Well, we really wanted a three dimensional look to create some nice depth and realism with the monkeys jumping. That meant we had to use wire to move the monkeys up and down. Like this.
We assumed we could remove the wires in post-production pretty quickly. That was a gross underestimation. Shooting took about a month (a day here, a day there) but Editing took the other 5 months. Granted, we were doing a bunch of other cool stuff in late 2017, like finishing and publishing our 1st children's board book (available here).
And we ran into some production delays.
Still, we expected this to be done last July, especially for a video that ended up less than 2 minutes long.
C'est La Vie. Hindsight is 20-20. Next time, we green screen the monkeys in. Sure, it won't look as cool, but will your 3 year old really notice? Perhaps that's not the point. We feel a sense of pride in making these videos and we want all of us parents to enjoy these videos too. We want to make these videos great!
So, now it's on to the next one. We promise it won't be another 6 months.
